Development and social problems
Since gaining independent from the British fifty year ago, we have been very lucky. We have emerged as one of the most politically and economically stable nation in this part of the world superseding most of the other ASEAN member countries.
This however has resulted in some very serious consequences which could pose a threat to our social and political stability. Rapid development has created more job opportunities in various sectors of the economy, opening up job opportunities in manufacturing and service sectors. This has attracted job seekers not only from her own citizen, but also from her neighboring countries as far as China, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Singapore.
There are over 2 million immigrants seeking job opportunities in Malaysia. They are taking over jobs which are supposed to be given to the locals, but because they are cheap, they are easily employed.
Urban migrations are largely to be blamed for the increasing crime rates in the cities. The bright city lights are attracting people from all walks of life to flock to the cities seeking employments opportunities.
The social problem
With new development in the city, the population will also grow. But the population growth will be much faster than what the public utilities can offer. There is definitely lack of space for proper housing, public parks and recreational areas. The cities are filled with high-rise buildings, but there is hardly any space for children to play.
Nowadays children had to grow fast due to the surrounding environment. With a hardly any space for recreational activities, children are confined to the small cubicles inside their homes.
There is little freedom for them to explore their own neighborhood, unlike the traditional villages where children are allowed to roam around freely.
To make matters worse, the advancing information technologies are adding salts to injury. Children often claimed that they are smarter than their parents and would not listen to parental advice. They surfs the internets and Cyber café for information.

Family institution is not regarded as an important part of their life anymore. In those days, children often cry over the parents’ shoulders for support. Now they preferred to be with their peer group for the latest gossips and support. Some of them only consider the existence parents, just for the fulfillment of their financial needs.
These children will in turn create more social problems for the parents and society.
